The Patented, Moving Sideframe, Shaftless Reelstand
In 2000, Stephen Weston patented the "Moving Side-frame Shaftless Reelstand", as the "Weston Reelstand", a low cost,
multi featured Reelstand for unwinding large reels, that could be scaled up to handle multi-tonne paper mill reels. Cleverly designed not to require traditional welded fabrication, it could be assembled 'Flat-Pack' style in hours, rather than weeks, using only four
'Allan Keys' wrenches.
In order to obtain startup investment, he built a prototype at home in his garage, powering lift and clamping from compressed air. From that he found investor funding to develop the Reelstand, eventually selling it to a leading
Converting machine manufacturer, which developed Stephen's idea into a commercial model. Customers included, Avery Dennison, Dupont Films, Whiteley's Paper, and highly confidential clients, configured as single unwind stands and as multiple back to back unwind stands.
